World Cup Hype And Sports Identity
SPEAKER_00Brother, fucking World Cup fever is upon us. Oh my God. You are known to be a huge fan of ball sports, team sports, generally. Big sports guy, Jay. He's always watching the sports. Man, come around and watch the rugby league. Oh my God. Fucking state of origin time, mate. Actually, I don't I'm a serious guy. I don't know. I don't mind rugby. Um I'm about rugby league. Um, but tell me, Joe, you have an insight. Wait, you've been watching any World Cup though? No. I I am I am act hate me now, actively ignoring the World Cup. I have no interest. Who cares? Does um does Ola watch it? No, she's not into sports. Yeah, okay. She likes MMA, she doesn't mind seeing people get punched in the face. Okay. Okay. Bitch thought Europe, you know, fun. No, not even. Uh she'll fight though. Hey, if there's a fight involved, if it's a fight around sport, she's there. So, like, I'm not a huge sports guy. You love football slash soccer though. You you played it. Always, yeah, loved playing it. Enjoyed it, always had a you know, respect for like a love for it, but never been a spectator. Okay. I just interesting. Yeah, never at all. I don't want you know, we've grown up, right? So many of our friends watch um Premier League. Sure. So many guys watch. We used to I remember back in the world game. My brother used to watch um the Italian Serie A all the time. It was a thing, you know. But personally, fucking 90 minutes is hard to come by. Beautiful game. And also, I mean, I really love playing soccer, but it's often pretty boring to watch. Depending, right? That said, I've fucking really been enjoying the World Cup this time around. Ooh, there we go. Yeah, I've been really enjoying it and I'm like getting into it. Have you got a favorite? Have you got someone? Not really, no. I just, I mean, I've obviously been following Australia and no one expects them to win. No. But um, yeah, I don't even know you're
Underdogs Rise And Africa's Talent
SPEAKER_00like uh France, Argentina, Spain, Portugal. It's like, you know, the superpowers, you know. But to that point, what's been very interesting to observe, and I'll get to the point of this in a moment. Please. But what's been interesting to observe this time around is that a lot of the superpowers are not what they were. Yeah. Right? Like you've had all of these countries that were always like total outsiders. Like nine out of ten African nations made it into the knockout round. Yeah. You know what I mean? It's been amazing. Dude, it's so fucking cool. And actually, I mean, that a lot of the African teams have been great for a long time. Yes. But we still have this thing in our head where it's like Brazil, France, England, you know, like all those major countries that are like the football nations. But if you look at the European leagues, they have amazing African players. That's right. Throughout all of them, even like the French team, Mbappe. What's his background? Yeah, you know what I mean? Like, so I I think there's it's just that's one of the benefits of colonialism. It's the whitewashing of it's just nonsense. Like you have such uh ability and skill coming out. I mean, it's all it it's not not it's not as though it has never been that way. It's just it's now much more prominent. It's so obvious. Yeah, yeah, it's almost more unique when you look at it when you see a team that doesn't have any and like sort of the Dutch team, yeah. Or like the Japan the Japanese team. They play so well, they're all Japanese, yeah. You know, actually, I think their
The Diving Problem And Video Review
SPEAKER_00keeper might be half African. Um possibly trigger. But in any case, um what I fucking hate about soccer with a passion, with a fucking passion, and it embarrasses me, is the diving. Of course. It is, and it's so it's so lame. But but but here's the thing we we all get to see the slow-mo replay where where the guy doesn't even touch him and he goes, then he grabs the other side of the face, yeah, yeah. He's on the ground crying, and you're like, you're like, you know, in Australia, in Aussie Rules, they'll do like, let's get the replay. Yeah, they put they go, yep, let's just see if that was a try or not, right? Did he score? Was it legal? Mate, I think they need to be giving cards for diving. Well, the yeah, this is what I don't understand is that they have a really good video ref operating game time, like the whole time around. Anything else, and they can supersede ref referee calls. So the referee doesn't have to request them to look, they're just looking at stuff. And if the ref makes a call and then the V, you know, 30 seconds later, they're like, nah, nah, nah, that was actually a penalty, whatever. But they don't seem to review diving and they don't really penalize the diving thing. Refs will either give the free kick or not, but they and and sometimes they're just like, whatever, mate, get up. But they don't penalize dudes for doing it, which is kind of why they do it. You know, like it the game doesn't disincentivize it. It's kind of part of the the theatrics is kind of part of trying to get a penalty. Dude, it's it's it's part of it, it's a tool, right? It's part of the game. Yeah, it's like if I can get a free kick here, right in the box, we got a strong chance of fucking scoring. Win the whole game, yeah. Yeah. So uh yeah, so I think from like particularly for us as like as grapplers, where we can see it, we think of ourselves as like, you know, rough and ready and like a little bit tough and like and a bit real. But in truth, if you get kicked in the face during a roll, if you didn't lose a tooth and you're not unconscious, you're kind of like, okay, keep going. Yeah, no, it's very rare that someone's like, ah, you know, and like, yeah, five minutes, right? Until until until the trainer squirts the water on the face, and then you rub it, and then you're good. Magic, you know, like that's the best, right? Where they're fucking like critical head injury, and then they put the water and then they're like, it's good now. I should be fine, you know, and then they're like full full speed sprint, yeah. But um, but so you know, so I'm I'm watching it as not a fully fledged football fan, right? And I'm like, these fucking cunts. Look at this weak shit. Like, yeah, how have they not fucking gotten this out of that? I'm like, me's how have they not fucking weeded this shit out of the game yet? Just I don't know, and I'm like blowing up. And Paulie, you know, Paulie's a fucking huge soccer guy, and I'm like, Paulie, what the fuck's going on? And yeah, he's got his
Jiu-Jitsu's Own Version Of Diving
SPEAKER_00take on it. But then I realized, holy fucking shit, we dive all the time in jujitsu. Now I'm talking about pulling gap, what do you think? You don't, but you watch a lot of the Brazilian fighters, you watch the fucking Mundials and motherfuckers are diving, pulling coals. Ah, yeah. Remember the guy, remember Tynan, Tynan's run last year? Sure. And he got he got done twice, I think, by a guy that reached in. Yeah, feigned the knee feigned the knee injury. Yeah, and you're like sketchy. I mean, we say it in it's the thing in football, right? South American teams are very good at it. Well, you know, that everyone does it, everyone does it. The gamification some teams are better. If we could racially blame a group of people, even though everyone it's a very diverse team, not assigning any race together. Everybody, everybody does it. Everybody says it. Some are better than others. I would say that, you know, it's it's maybe one of the things. Uh well, nah, I won't even
Sponsor Break: Electrolytes And Protein Bars
SPEAKER_00go there. But hey, if I can give you my honest recommendation for one of the best supplements I've implemented in my daily, particularly for my jujitsu training, it's sodium. It's these electrolytes. We talk about them all the time. They've sponsored the show for some time, but it's excellent. Flavor's great, but more importantly, the electrolytes are exactly what my body wants in a hard, sweaty jujitsu session. It replenishes uh my system with all the stuff that I need after all of that sweat. Uh, magnesium, potassium, salt, it's great stuff. You can get yourself a bunch and you can get yourself a discount if you go to sodi sodou i.com.au and you use the code bulletproof15, you get 15% off your order. Today's show is brought to you by our good friends at Raised Nutrition, Raised the Bar. They've got all the flavors. They've got tropical Usae. If that doesn't speak BJJ, I don't know what does. They've got salted caramel, which is delicious. And they've also got rich chocolate and roast almond, which goes awesome with coffee. So if you're looking for a snack to power your BJJ, this is built for you. Eat all the clean, good stuff without the nasties. Whether you're trying to get some energy before training or you're trying to speed your recovery after, go to raisenutrition.com and use the code bulletproof and you'll get yourself some free bars.
Is Gamesmanship Ever Acceptable
SPEAKER_00Get it today. No, no, no. I I think it depends on we've seen very famous instances from certain famous players for like being like, ah, ref, and nothing happened, and that's resulted in the change of the game, right, in in in uh football. That you know, very famously, um you know, someone had pretended to have the ball kicked in their face and fell down, and and the referee was like looking away, but nothing happened. The player just passed the ball to them, and then suddenly it's a penalty, and then that results in a goal, which changes history, yeah. Right? I do so you're like, that's kind of fucked. But you there are game players in jujitsu who you know it's kind of it it it is possible. There are people who try to play their advantages through faking. Motherfuckers, when someone wants it bad, some motherfuckers bad acting. All of their morals, all their honour. That's right, all their dignity to get the to get the W, right? Oh, it's kind of fucked. I I think it's less prevalent in BJJ because it's so shamed. Whereas in in and I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I'm but I'm saying when you come to football, soccer, it's very accepted at the highest level. Yeah. Whereas you can see Paula Meow get his knee snapped in half and he's just dead-eyeing you. Yeah. Like, no. I will refuse I will refuse to acknowledge that you have reconstructed my knee. Yeah. So I mean, I would argue this is the irony of it, right? Okay. Is that like, and I'm trying to remember that guy with with Tynan, right? It was a knee reap. Yeah. Wasn't it? Yeah. He he kind of pushed it there and turned and was like, ah, like to appeal to the rest. Oh, yeah. But that guy's that guy is notorious. Notorious, right? He did it like a bunch of times in that competition. Yeah. And um that guy probably, if you had him in a in a straight ankle lock, would probably let his foot break, right? He might. He's a tough cunt. He's an elite grappler. Yeah. That's what elite grappers do. But you can be a tough cunt, but still take a dive and be that character. Does that not when it when it suits you? And this is the this is the big irony. And this is what you see in football too, right? You see, you see these kind of like snowflakes where they like, where there's not even a contact and they dive and grab their shin or whatever. And then two minutes later, you'll see them have a big fucking body contact because they're close, they're in on the goal and like, I want the fucking ball. And somehow miraculously everyone stays on their feet that time, you know, and looks looks strong and looks confident and whatever. So it's like it's a it's a real shame because I think we like for non-fans of the sport, you see that and you're like, these guys are a bunch of pussies. Like, that's all I'm seeing right now. Right. But it's like, no, they're actually not, like, they're great athletes and they're doing cool shit, but they have this fucking tool that they use, which just you don't think that undermines how because obviously we are fans of UFC, right? And so we you're seeing people with broken noses, lips hanging off their faces still continuing to fight. Well, you know, and so we are fans of that, and but you see it sometimes in the UFC, right? No, no, no. There's there's been gameplay and people faking stuff, and you know, and and and it's all but it's almost yeah, it's almost so hard for us to stomach, and I think it's and I think the fighters
Socceroos Heartbreak And 4 A.M. Plans
SPEAKER_00know that. And and do you think it's acceptable, Joe? I think this is where we've got to get to. Is it acceptable to do that fake shit, do that nonsense because it's accepted by others? Do you feel it doesn't undermine when you say acceptable what do you mean? You accept that? Are you cool with that, Joe? No, I'm not cool with it. But will I still watch the sport? Yeah. Will I still be like, you know what I mean? I'll still fucking support it. I'm not gonna, you know, turn my back on the World Cup. I will not turn my back on the World Cup. I will. Soccerers will continue to turn my back on the tomb. Soccerers are playing tomorrow as of the time of recording. They're playing 4 a.m. tomorrow. This is our this could be the first time if we won against Egypt tomorrow, 4 a.m. Australian Eastern time, this would be the first knockout round we've ever won. We faced Italy in the knockout round in 2006. I did watch that game. I was fucking there in the stadium with Polly. That was and Italy took the fucking dive and got the penalty in like the second last minute. Yeah, and they went through. And you know what fucking happened to Italy? They didn't make it to a World Cup since fucking all guts. No one's seen them. Oh man. I feel terrible for my Italian friends. I actually feel terrible because you're like, shit, they they haven't fucking shown up since they love the game so much. Yeah, they're so good at it. I mean, you know, whatever they were. But it's but yeah, it's it's acceptable enough that I will still spectate, but I'll whinge about it. Perfect, some Australian. Because it's there's no other there's no other league. That's that's what we're really good at in Australia. Watching sport religiously, but still complaining. He's been doing it all day, Raf. Anyway, I'll be on the beers tomorrow morning, 4 a.m. I'll be at Strongman Saturdays. Not at 4 a.m., bro. You'll be getting your fucking game sleep. No, I'll be back. Joey's gonna be up. I'm gonna be out there watching games, fucking just athletic from that couch. Fucking shoulders feeling a bit stiff, you know. Wolming up the elbows for the beers. Yeah, sure. I won't be on the beers. I'll I'll make a coffee and you know, no,
Why The World Cup Still Matters
SPEAKER_00enjoy that. I think what I've seen, what I love is the passion. When I was in the States, the vibe was so big around World Cup. Yeah, was it growing? Mexico, like it wasn't just like it hadn't started yet, right? No, no, it was on. Oh, was it? Absolutely, it was on. Oh, wow, okay. And people going to Mexico games, buddy, you know, because it was all over the country. Yeah. And it's in Mexico and Canada, right? Yeah. And man, people were G'd up. I was really stoked for the vibe. And so in that way, you gotta love it. The world game, it brings people together. Does it so fuck next time you watch a soccer player take a dive and you're like, these mother just remember, we're all cut from the same cloth. We all human, fam.
